Institute of Silk Road Studies, Northwest University, founded in January 2014 on the basis of Institute of History of Northwestern China, Northwest University, is the first substantive Silk Road Institute in China with solid research tradition and outcome accumulation in history, geography, ethnic and religious problem and civilization intercourse. Now president of Northwest University Professor Guo Lihong serves as director of the institute, Professor Lu Shanbing serves as executive vice director. The institute boasts a high efficient team and abundant research potential and power, including 11 professional researchers with doctorates, 4 of whom have overseas educational background, and it also employs over 60 adjunct researchers both at home and abroad.
Institute of Silk Road Studies carries out its related researches on significant practical issues as well as the history and culture of the Silk Road in Shaanxi and China. It also establishes a series of incorporeal institutions like “Silk Road Strategy Research Center”, “Silk Road History and Geography Research Center”, “Silk Road Cultural Heritage Research Center”, “Silk Road Social and Economic Development Research Center”, “Silk Road Civilization Intercourse Research Center” and “Silk Road Art Research Center” to build a collaborative research platform.
Institute of Silk Road Studies hammers at the integration of domestic and foreign academic resources and Silk Road collaborative innovation research. It also has obtained more than 10 state-level scientific research subjects, published hundreds of academic papers and edited Silk Road Thesaurus, an authoritative reference book for the study of the Silk Road. The institute has doctor and master authorization center with Chinese history subject and has cultivated more than 100 graduate students, which provides talents for both the Silk Road research and the Belt and Road Construction. The institute focuses on the national and local significant practical issues, offers suggestions for the Belt and Road construction both in national and provincial levels and strives to build new think-tanks of the Silk Road. Institute of Silk Road Studies is awarded as the Think-tank Union Director Unit of the Belt and Road, and it also edits Silk Road Communications and releases Chinese Think Tank Top Colleges and Universities regularly, which has profound influence both at home and abroad. At the same time, the institute seeks for international exchanges and cooperation. It has successfully hosted a lot of international conferences such as “International Symposium on the Silk Road Economic Belt” and “Sino-Korea International Symposium on the Silk Road”, and has successively built partnership with universities, research institutions and think-tanks of Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Korea and India, forming a certain international influence..
Institute of Silk Road Studies, Northwest University adheres to the spirits of the Silk Road “Peaceful Cooperation, Openness and Inclusiveness, Mutual Learning and Mutual Benefit”. The institute hopes to build a collaborative innovation platform for research talents of the Silk Road, to offer academic supports for the construction of the Belt and Road, to reinforce cooperation with the Silk Road related organizations in other countries, and will endeavor to promote mutual understanding of different civilizations in the world and form the community of human destiny.
